FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is your turnaround time?

Turnaround time depends on several factors, including your location, weather conditions, the season, order size, and any requested repairs. The timeframes below reflect our general guidelines.

Items dropped off directly at our laundering facility or at the Davison and Milford drop sites typically have a 1–2 week turnaround.

Items dropped off at any other drop site generally require 3–4 weeks, depending on logistics and route schedules.
Please note that repairs may extend turnaround times by approximately one additional week.

If you are on the west side of Michigan, turnaround times may be 6-8 weeks due to drive times.

How do I pay?

Invoices are sent via email after all services are completed. Payment is expected immediately within 5 days of the invoice issue date. Below are our payment options:

Cash: On Site

Credit/Debit Card: View the Pay Invoice page.

Venmo: View the Pay Invoice page.

Do you offer discounts?

Absolutely! Our most popular discount is the bulk item discount for medium to large sized orders.

We also have the $200 Stablemates discount for large barn orders. Each Stablemate serves as a representative for their barn, managing blanket pickups, deliveries, and payments. In return, Stablemates enjoy a $200 discount on their order.

How long should a horse blanket last?

Quality and properly maintained horse blankets should last about 10 years. Poorly maintained horse blankets, on average, last a maximum of 5 years. Yearly waterproofing, repairing, and proper storage will significantly extend the lifespan of your blanket.

How do I know if my horse blanket is waterproof?

Properly waterproofed horse blankets will cause water to form "beads" on the surface. The water should remain on top of the outer layer and soak through slightly.

Improperly waterproofed blankets, on the other hand, allow water to accumulate and "sink" into the outer layer. This leads to the inner layer becoming saturated, causing your horse to get wet. Wet horses lose body heat 20 times faster than dry horses, making it extremely dangerous to use improperly waterproofed blankets.

What is horse blanket "flooding"?

A term coined by us for the horse laundry industry, in this context, “flooding” captures two ideas at once:

  • A lot of water collecting in one place.

  • Something being pushed beyond its limits.

Flooding is what happens when a horse blanket or sheet’s waterproof membrane encounters too much water for too long, eventually allowing moisture to seep through. This is NOT waterproof failure.

What's the difference between horse blanket flooding and horse blanket waterproof failure?

  • Waterproof failure (as we define it) means the blanket can’t keep any water out at all — it fails every single time, no matter the conditions.

  • Flooding, on the other hand, means the blanket is doing its job — just not indefinitely. Every waterproof fabric barrier has limits.

Imagine you have a small pond in your backyard…

Every spring, rain fills it a bit, then the water level drops as it evaporates or absorbs into the soil on the sunny days that follow. All normal.

Now imagine a very rainy spring — days and days of nonstop rain. You’re building an Ark type of rain. The pond rises higher and higher because the rain never stops long enough for evaporation or drainage to keep up. Eventually, it overflows.

That’s exactly what happens to horse blankets and especially “rain sheets.” They can’t evaporate any water and it is ongoing moisture.

“But my blanket is brand new and held up fine last year!”

Sure — and that may be true. But conditions aren’t the same everywhere (or every year). Sometimes:

  • Manufacturers make mistakes in the membrane,

  • Brand quality varies,

  • Sometimes it really is just that much water hitting your horse from the sky, the ground, and their own body heat.

And remember: these blankets must have tiny perforations to stay breathable so your horse doesn’t overheat. Breathability always means some potential for water under extreme conditions.

Why this isn’t usually your blanket cleaning company’s fault (nor your fault)!

It’s easy to assume the waterproofing product failed or was applied incorrectly. While mistakes can happen, they are rare. Most blanket-cleaning companies use proper products and procedures. But the reality is: no company can guarantee a blanket will remain 100% waterproof in every condition. Their job is to help EXTEND the life of the waterproof layer — not make it invincible. If a blanket is exposed to hours of heavy rain or rolled in water, it’s going to absorb moisture eventually. Even your own winter coat would. If it didn’t, you’d overheat — and so would your horse. A completely sealed, non-breathable blanket would be like wrapping them in a tent.

However… none of this means we don’t want to help you! We always want to help you. If you encounter leakage, here’s what to do:

  • Bring your horse in and remove the blanket or sheet promptly.

  • Check where it leaked and whether your horse rolled.

  • Hang the blanket to dry for at least 12 hours.

  • When it’s fully dry, test the outer shell: pour a little water on the outside of the area that previously leaked.

  • Feel the inner lining directly behind the test spot.

Here’s how to interpret the results:

  • If the inner shell feels soaked: that’s likely a waterproofing failure.

  • If it’s only slightly damp or not wet at all—and the water beads off: your blanket was probably just flooded, not failed.

The key solution?

LET IT BREATHE. LET IT DRY. DO NOT USE IT AGAIN UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY DRY.

We also don’t recommend leaving horses outside in constant, cold rain whenever it can be avoided. Even the best blankets have their limits. So, before contacting your blanket cleaning company with torches and pitchforks…

Always check whether the issue was flooding. If it turns out to be a true waterproofing failure, approach your cleaning company with an open mind and give us a chance to help. Most are like us and genuinely happy to help diagnose the problem, offer suggestions, and work with you to get it resolved!

Is it worth it to send my horse blanket for professional cleaning and repair?

Absolutely! Maintaining horse blankets is a crucial part of horse care, ensuring they last longer. Consider this example:

The average cost of a brand new heavyweight horse blanket is about $200. If you decide to replace it every year versus getting it serviced for 10 years, you will have spent $2,000. That's a LOT of money!

Alternatively, if the blanket is maintained and sent in yearly for washing, waterproofing, and repairs, the annual average cost is about $75. Over 10 years, you'll spend $750 on maintenance plus the initial $200 for the blanket, totaling $950. That's a BIG difference!

You most definitely can do it yourself as well, but here are some factors to consider:

  1. Machinery: Many laundromats don't allow horse blankets because they can damage the machines. They may also prohibit them to accommodate other customers needing the washers for their clothing.

  2. Detergent: Regular detergents are harmful to both the horse and the blanket.

  3. Cost: Using products like Nikwax is very costly in small quantities.

  4. Time: Washing a horse blanket is time-consuming, and waiting for it to air-dry takes even longer. Not only that, but the amount of time spent researching products and learning how to wash them can take days. Do you have that kind of time?

  5. Repairs: Finding someone who has the sewing equipment to do repairs is difficult. Ensuring that the repairs are quality and durable is also a challenge within itself.

Overall, we suggest using a professional horse blanket cleaning company like ours. In the end, you'll be paying the same amount in products, time, and labor to do it yourself as you would by using a company that handles it for you. Sit back, relax, and let us take that stressful work off your hands!

After this period, Equine Laundry LLC has no obligation to store or deliver such items and may handle or dispose of them at its discretion. If any items remain available, clients must retrieve them from the laundering facility as delivery will not be provided after 30 days.
